Ofelia Gelvezon Tequi’s work is currently being exhibited at the Atelyer, Bulwagan ng Dangal, Gonzalez Hall at UP Diliman. An internationally renowned painter and printmaker, Ofelia Tequi earned both a BA in Fine Arts and a BA in English from the University of the Philippines. She currently resides in France. The exhibit will be open until March 9, 2012.

Isabella Du Graf is an award-winning jazz vocalist and has performed with artists such as Minoru Ozone and Bobby McFerrin. Among her awards are the Best Alto Jazz Vocalist at the Lionel Hamption Jazz Festival (2005) and the Ella Fitzgerald Outstanding Vocalist Award at the Essentially Jazz Competition (Lincoln Center, NYC, 2006). She recorded her second album, “Live at Egan’s” in 2007 and is working on her third album. She recently finished her Bachelor’s degree at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. She is the daughter of Esther Du ’71.

A self-taught guitarist, Eric Espiritu attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Masschusetts and earned a degree in Film Scoring. He played for various bands in the Boston music scene before moving to New York City in 2008 and joining the Brooklyn-based Atomic Tom band. Atomic Tom had a major record deal with Universal Republic Records and released their debut album “The Moment” in November 2010. In 2011, the band toured and played festivals around the US and Canada and went worked with producer Don Gilmore to record two new songs co-written by Eric. Eric is currently producing and writing material for Atomic Tom’s second album. He is the son of Rita Villapando Espiritu ’72.

• The UPAA Lifetime Distinguished Achievement Awards
• The UPAA Distinguished Service Awards
• The UPAA Multi-Generation UP Alumni Family Awards
Nominations may be made by any UP alumnus, alumni chapter or local search committee. Evaluation of nominees and selection of awardees will be made by the UPAA Search and Awards Committee and affirmed by the UPAA Board of Directors.

The Distinguished Alumni Awards categories

The categories for the Distinguished Alumni Awards are delineated in thematic terms rather than along professional lines, and may include, but are not limited to, the following:

The evaluation of nominees for the Awards will be based on the following general criteria: a) service orientation, b) leadership, c) impact and d) integrity

GENERAL INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES

Each year, the University of the Philippines Alumni Association (UPAA) gives recognition to alumni achievers, as follows:

• The UPAA Most Distinguished Alumna/Alumnus Award may be given to an alumnus/alumna who—in addition to qualifying for a UPAA Distinguished Alumni Award—also satisfies the criteria for the Most Distinguished Alumnus Award described below

• The UPAA Distinguished Alumni Awards are conferred on alumni who have demonstrated exceptional achievements and outstanding contributions in their chosen field of endeavor.

• The UPAA Lifetime Distinguished Achievement Awards are given to senior alumni who have achieved professional distinction and demonstrated meritorious service throughout their career.

• The UPAA Distinguished Service Awards are given to individual alumni and alumni chapters or groups who have rendered exceptional service in the pursuit of the goals of the University and/or the Association.

• UPAA Multi-Generation U.P. Alumni Family Awards will be bestowed on families who have produced, as of the end of 2011, at least three successive generations of U.P. alumni.

Nominations for these awards may be made by any U.P. alumnus, alumni chapter or local search committee. Evaluation of nominees and selection of awardees will be made by the UPAA Search and Awards Committee and affirmed by the UPAA Board of Directors.

The guidelines for these five types of awards are detailed below.

UPAA MOST DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AWARD

The nominee must satisfy all the criteria established for the UPAA Distinguished Alumni Award described below, and must significantly stand out among the Distinguished Alumni Awardees selected for the year, e.g., if s/he achieved distinction in multiple professional fields or areas of endeavor, or made a clearly greater qualitative or quantitative impact than other awardees in her/his profession or areas of endeavor.

In addition, the nominee must have attained national, and possibly international, prestige that has brought honor and distinction to the University and the country.

The Most Distinguished Alumna/Alumnus Awardee is required to personally receive her/his award during the 2012 General Alumni-Faculty Homecoming and Reunion on 23 June 2012, and to attend the U.P. Alumni Council Meeting the day before, on 22 June 2012, both to be held at the Ang Bahay ng Alumni in the U.P. Diliman campus.

UPAA DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARDS

The UPAA Distinguished Alumni Awards are conferred on alumni who have demonstrated, in their chosen field of endeavor, exceptional achievements and outstanding contributions that bring about substantial benefits to society and distinct honor to the University. Recognition is given to achievements and contributions that impact the community in which the alumnus/alumna is or has been active, whether this is at the local, national or international level.

General Criteria for the Awards:

Evaluation of nominees for the Distinguished Alumni Awards will be based on the following general criteria:

SERVICE ORIENTATION – the nominee’s work has clearly benefited other people, groups and society at large, and not merely private or personal interests;

LEADERSHIP – the nominee has demonstrated effective and inspiring personal leadership in accomplishing the work for which s/he is being awarded; i.e., achievements can be attributed more to the person than to the official position/job/title s/he has held;

IMPACT – the nominee’s work has had a substantial impact on the people, geographic area, or sector covered by the award, both qualitatively (how deep, lasting or transformative) and quantitatively (how many people or groups benefited within the area or sector);

INTEGRITY – there is no serious concern about, or challenge to, the nominee’s personal integrity.

Award Categories

The categories for the Distinguished Alumni Awards are delineated in thematic terms rather than along professional lines, and may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Good governance
• Public service
• Poverty alleviation and human development
• Peace and social cohesion
• Gender equality or women empowerment
• Community empowerment

Awards need not be given in all the categories listed above if there are no deserving nominees. Other fields or areas of award may be considered as defined by the achievements of a deserving nominee. The UPAA Distinguished Alumni Awards are meant to be a cut above those given to alumni who have achieved successful professional careers. To deserve the award, all nominees, over and above the highly successful careers they may have attained, must still meet the criteria of Service Orientation, Leadership, Impact and Integrity described above.

The UPAA is making a special effort this time to identify for nomination, unsung alumni achievers—those whose achievements in little-known corners of the country are exceptional but have remained unheralded and unrecognized.

Distinguished Alumni Awardees are required to personally receive their award during the 2012 General Alumni-Faculty Homecoming and Reunion on 23 June 2012, and to attend the U.P. Alumni Council Meeting the day before, on 22 June 2012, both to be held at the Ang Bahay ng Alumni in the U.P. Diliman campus.

UPAA LIFETIME DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

The nominee, throughout the course of a career that is completed or nearly so, must have consistently rendered illustrious and meritorious service and achieved distinction in her/his areas of endeavor, which altogether clearly made the nominee a credit to her/his profession and to the University. The nominee, furthermore, should be an outstanding citizen who has led an exemplary life.

Given the character of this award, alumni who have retired from service in the public or private sector (but may yet be otherwise active), may merit higher rating points for the award.

A Lifetime Distinguished Achievement Awardee is required to personally receive her/his award during the 2012 General Alumni-Faculty Homecoming and Reunion on 23 June 2012, and to attend the U.P. Alumni Council Meeting the day before, on 22 June 2012, both to be held at the Ang Bahay ng Alumni in the U.P. Diliman campus.

UPAA DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS

The UPAA Distinguished Service Awards are given as a special recognition to individual alumni and alumni chapters or groups who have rendered exceptional service in the pursuit of the goals of the University, the Association, and the alumni in general. In addition to the merits of their contributions, the integrity of nominees shall also be considered.

The UPAA Distinguished Service Award for an alumni chapter may be conferred on an in-country or foreign-based alumni chapter, accredited by the UPAA, for its meritorious and exceptional activities, projects and other services which benefit not only the chapter members, but also the University, the UPAA and the alumni in general.

Individual alumni who are selected for the Distinguished Service Award are required to personally accept their awards during the 2012 General Alumni-Faculty Homecoming and Reunion on 23 June 2012 and to attend the U.P. Alumni Council Meeting and the UPAA Chapters Meeting the day before, on 22 June 2011. These three events will be held at the Ang Bahay ng Alumni in the U.P. Diliman campus. Groups or chapters being given the UPAA Distinguished Service Award are likewise required to send to these same events their duly designated representatives to receive the award.

UPAA MULTI-GENERATION U.P. ALUMNI FAMILY RECOGNITION

In 2012, the UPAA will give special recognition to families who have produced, as of the end of 2011, three or more successive generations of U.P. alumni, i.e., grandparent(s), parent(s), child(ren), and/or grandchild(ren). Regardless of their current place of residence or citizenship, each of these alumni in the family must have: spent some years in the Philippines after their studies in U.P., rendered some service to the nation, and continued to uphold the principles and values that the University stands for.

Alumni members of the families so recognized and their relatives and friends are welcome to attend the General Alumni-Faculty Homecoming and Reunion on 23 June 2012 at the Ang Bahay ng Alumni when the U.P. families will be recognized. However, at least one alumnus or alumna member of the family is required to personally accept this recognition on behalf of the family.

THE NOMINATION PROCESS

Nominations for the different awards are accepted from any U.P. alumnus or alumni chapter. The nominees need not know initially that they are being nominated.

In addition to the nominations submitted by individual alumni and UPAA chapters, the UPAA may establish search committees in the different campuses of the University and specific geographic areas to intensify the search for awardees.

INSTRUCTIONS AND IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR NOMINATORS

1. Nominations for the Most Distinguished Alumna/Alumnus, Distinguished Alumni Award, Lifetime Distinguished Achievement Award, Distinguished Service Award for an Alumna/Alumnus, and the U.P. Family Recognition shall be made by accomplishing and submitting three (3) copies of the corresponding nomination forms attached below.
2. For the Most Distinguished Alumna/Alumnus, Distinguished Alumni, Lifetime Distinguished Achievement, and Distinguished Service for Alumna/Alumnus Awards, documentation in support of the statement of achievements, such as copies of diplomas, certificates, citations, news articles, photographs, etc., may be submitted in triplicate. If possible, three copies of the nominee’s recent passport photograph (2”x2”) should be submitted.
3. For the Distinguished Service Award for an Alumni Chapter or Group, no nomination form is to be filled up. Instead, the nominator should prepare a statement on the work, achievements, accomplishments or performance of the chapter or group, all of which forms the basis and justification for the nomination. Supporting documents such as copies of citations/awards, news clippings, photographs and other materials may be submitted in triplicate.
4. The UPAA prefers that, besides submitting the nomination forms and supporting documents in triplicate paper copies, nominators also prepare and send an electronic or digital version of these materials, i.e., in the form of an email attachment or CD. In any case, all these must be delivered or mailed to:

5. Nominations should be received by the UPAA not later than 29 February 2012 and/or postmarked not later than the above date. Only complete and properly accomplished forms shall be accepted.
6. The UPAA Search and Awards Committee will deliberate on the nominations and may request additional information or documents from the nominators. The Committee’s decisions are final and are submitted to the UPAA Board for affirmation.
7. The UPAA will immediately notify the awardee of her/his selection for the award. In the event that the awardee declines to accept the award and/or fails to attend the awarding ceremonies, the UPAA reserves the right to withdraw the award.
8. Awards may not be given in all categories every year. Sometimes there are no nominees in a certain category, or the nominees may not meet the standards for granting the award. For the Distinguished Alumni Award, other fields or areas of award may be considered as defined by the achievements of a deserving nominee.
9. The UPAA reserves the right to keep two (2) copies of the nomination papers and to dispose of the rest not claimed after two (2) weeks from the award day.
10. All Alumni Awardees must attend the awarding ceremonies during the General Alumni Homecoming and Reunion on Saturday, 23 June 2012 to personally receive their award, and the U.P. Alumni Council Meeting the day before, on 22 June, when selected Alumni Awardees may be asked to speak in a panel discussion. Both events will be held at Ang Bahay ng Alumni in the U.P. Diliman campus.
11. All Alumni Awardees, except for the Multi-generation UP Families, are requested to prepare a mini-poster/billboard presentation of their achievements, products, outputs, and works for display at Ang Bahay ng Alumni during both the abovementioned Alumni Council Meeting and the Alumni Homecoming.

Batch 62 of Upsilon Sigma Phi and Sigma Delta Phi held a kick-off party for their Golden Jubilee on January 16, 2012. Hosted by Gari and Gladys Tiongco and held at the UP Executive House, the party was well-attended by alumni and residents alike.

On December 9, 2011, the SDPAA West Coast held its induction officers and a joint Christmas party with USPGLA.

At 5 pm on December 10, alumnae sisters and residents gathered together at the bowling alley of Metropolitan Club, Rockwell for the SDPAA’s annual Christmas party. Great food and great company were the themes for the evening. The SDPAA also launched its new website with design by Sigrid Aragona ’99, site map and editing by Issy Reyes ’80, and materials courtesy of SDPAA board member Carla Varona ’99.

After dinner, the sisters engaged in a friendly bowling match with four teams: The Starirays, The Exterminators, The Champions, and The Powers That Be. The Champions won first prize and team members Ginggay Pajaro ’83 and Roselyn Perez ’83 took home the MVP titles. Prizes were donated by Via Venetto.

Lyca Benitez-Brown ’71 was writer, director, and producer of “Dance of My Life,” a 75-minute documentary about the first Filipina Carnival Queen in Brazil. The docu was shot in Sao Paulo (Brazil), the Philippines, France, New York, and Connecticut with an international cast and crew. It premiered at the New York Hell’s Kitchen Film Festival in September 2011 and opened at the 8th Chicago Filipino American Film Festival in November 2011. For more information visit: www.queenbessie.com.

For those who may not remember, Lyca first made waves as Executive Director and Producer of the Philippine Sesame Street Project and “Batibot”. The Philippine version of “Sesame Street” was co-produced with the Children’s Television Workshop of new York and later on became “Batibot” — the country’s longest-running educational children’s TV program.
