THE BETTY GO BELTMONTE AWARDS

The Betty Go Belmonte Awards are bestowed on outstanding individuals and organizations in recognition of how they significantly promote the values and virtues of the Award’s namesake who was the Charter President of the University of the Philippines Sigma Delta Phi Alumnae Association incorporated in 1985. Betty Go Belmonte is a model stalwart of timeless commitment to responsible journalism, integrity, and humanitarianism.

The Awards were developed by the 2006-2008 Board of Directors of the Association to honor the sterling legacy of a singular sorority sister. Awardees exemplify some of Betty Go belmonte’s merits and commitments such as advocacy of peace and social cohesion; dynamic and motivating leadership; sincere generosity and genuine caring concern; quiet and disciplined work etich anchored in humility, compassion and commitment; non-violent social reform; highly principled and values-oriented personhood with strong spirituality and moral ascendancy; renowned integrity and credibility.

Betty May Go became a member of the Sigma Delta Phi Sorority at the Diliman campus of the University of the Philippines in 1952. After graduating, she earned a Masters in American Literature from Claremont College in California, USA. She married lawyer Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte, currently the out-going, re-elected Mayor of Quezon City. Sonny and Betty have four children – Miguel, Isaac, Joy, and Kevin.

Betty Go Belmonte exemplifies the ultimate spirit of sisterhood and its service to others.

Her consistent high scholastic performance and perseverance of purpose at the University of the Philippines Institute of Mass Communications since her freshman year as a major in journalism, fine human relations and interaction with peers, professors, and members of the community at large, simplicity, kindness, pleasantness and warmth of personality, single out her potential to become a journalist of substance, and exemplify the values and virtues that are the inspiring legacy of Betty Go Belmonte for the youth of every generation.

The Betty Go Belmonte Outstanding Sorority Service Award

Her selfless and affectionate dedication to Sigma Delta Phi Sorority since becoming a member in 1948 during which time she magnanimously served as Grand Archon while a resident sister, President of the pioneering forerunner of the Sigma Delta Phi Alumnae Association, Trustee of Sigma Delta Phi Outreach Trust Funds, Inc., Adviser of Sigma Delta Phi Alumnae Association, and host of numerous at-homes, composed the memorable Sigma Delta Phi song, and received the prestigious Mariang Maya Award for her excellence in the field of Visual and Performing Arts exemplifies enduring love for sisterhood and the values that are inspiring legacy of Betty Go Belmonte for the youth of every generation.

FLORENCE MACAGBA TADIAR, M.D. ‘52

The Betty Go Belmonte Peace and Women Empowerment Award

Her persistent, courageous and sometimes controversial promotion of women’s health and women’s rights – particularly sexual and reproductive rights – amidst deeply entrenched and dominant conservatism, leadership in internationsl public health that built pioneering links between women’s health advocates and public health professionals to improve the status of women and girls, research, teaching, policy recommendations and cause-oriented programs in medicine, public health and health administration coupled with passionate and selfless service to poor rural and urban communities that lack access to medical care and empowerment exemplify enduring dedication to sisterhood and the values and virtues that are the inspiring legacy of Betty Go Belmonte for the youth of every generation.

Her socio-civic leadership particularly in the field of disability prevention and rehabilitation involving policy recommendation, legislation, implementation of international conventions, special education, livelihood training, and the reorientation of media to prevent ridicule of those with disabilities, sustained volunteerism in support of numerous charities, educational scholarships, sports programs, medical missions, and hospital improvements to benefit the underserved in the Philippines and Southeast Asia as well as relief efforts during natural calamities, and humility, kindness, sincerity, elegance and quiet mean anchoring  her steady and understated style of intrapersonal relations and project management exemplify enduring dedication to sisterhood and the values and virtues that are the inspiring legacy of Betty Go Belmonte for the youth of every generation.

It’s dedicated alleviation of human suffering and promotion of life, health and respect for the dignity of the human being that underscore the universal need for mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace among peoples, heroic volunteers, members, staff and donors offering care and compassion to the wounded, abandoned and pained in the country since the Philippine Revolution, constant efforts to provide blood donations, disaster relief and an evolving holistic approach to uplifting the condition of the most vulnerable through preventive medicine, therapeutic counseling and youth leadership training, and above all its unwavering faith in the goodness of the human spirit exemplify the values and virtues that are the inspiring legacy of Betty Go Belmonte for youth of every generation.
